Like when someone offends one of these groups and loses their job or faces criminal charges. Each of these sub-groups will be offered tainted victories by the authorities. There seems to be another level to it as well, that I think of as ‘the complicity plan’. Especially as legal recognition of definitions becomes more pervasive. It’s easy to see how the growing mass of identies, genders, orientations, and so on could grow into that. It hammered many more wedges into the population and made infighting easier and resistance harder. It didn’t make colonialism and slavery any less bad, just really, really complicated. Each had their own sterotypes, rights and restriction, enforced by law. That had over 100 categories for every possible mix of ethnicities. Meanwhile in South America there was th Casta system. In the history of American racism there was the One Drop Rule – where if someone had any black ancestry, they were considered black. I think it’s something more specific with a particular historical precedent. It’s easy to see identity politics as a strategy of divide and conquer.
